USENIX Announces the Winners of the 2023 Internet Defense Prize

Today USENIX announced the winners of the 2023 Internet Defense Prize competition. Created in 2014, the award is funded by Meta and offered in partnership with USENIX to celebrate contributions to the protection and defense of the internet. The USENIX Security ’23 Awards Committee, which is composed of members of the USENIX Security ’23 Program Committee, independently recommended three honorees. All winners of the Prize are papers to be published and presented at the 32nd USENIX Security Symposium in Anaheim, CA, USA, on August 9–11, 2023.

This year two excellent papers tied for first place; thus USENIX has awarded two co-winners of the Prize, listed here in the order in which they will be presented at USENIX Security ’23:

• “TreeSync: Authenticated Group Management for Messaging Layer Security” by Théophile Wallez, Inria Paris; Jonathan Protzenko, Microsoft Research; Benjamin Beurdouche, Mozilla; Karthikeyan Bhargavan, Inria Paris

• “Glaze: Protecting Artists from Style Mimicry by Text-to-Image Models” by Shawn Shan, Jenna Cryan, Emily Wenger, Haitao Zheng, Rana Hanocka, and Ben Y. Zhao, University of Chicago

USENIX also honors the runner-up in the competition: “Fuzztruction: Using Fault Injection-based Fuzzing to Leverage Implicit Domain Knowledge” by Nils Bars, Moritz Schloegel, Tobias Scharnowski, and Nico Schiller, Ruhr-Universität Bochum; Thorsten Holz, CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security.

USENIX congratulates the 2023 winners of the Internet Defense Prize and thanks them for their contributions to help make the Internet more secure. USENIX also thanks Meta for its generosity in funding the Prize. To be considered for the Prize in 2024, submit a paper to USENIX Security ’24.
